Sorry, this item has sold.

These piton hammers were made by Ames for the 10th Mountain for use as during WW II. These hammers are very rare. The 10th Mountain was one of the first special forces groups in the US Army and was created so the American army would be ready and capable of handling the brutal conditions and difficulties one would encounter during combat in the mountains of Europe. Their first battle was a nighttime assault up a 1500 foot high ridge. The Germans considered this ridge impervious to enemy attacks, so the ridge was left lightly defended. The attack caught the Germans completely off guard and was an unmitigated success.

Piton hammers were/are used to drive in pitons that allow mountains to be ascended and descended faster and safer.
